Curtailment Mitigation for PCLRs: Modeling the Effects of Front-of-Meter Netting
Aurora Energy Research models how front-of-meter netting could cut curtailment for data centers on ERCOT’s PCLR pathway.
Aurora Energy Research
In brief
Prepared for Google and V-Wire, a company Luminary Strategies advises, Aurora Energy Research’s independent analysis studies data centers that connect through ERCOT’s Provisional Controllable Load Resource pathway, which offers faster interconnection in exchange for curtailment when the transmission system is constrained. Modeling three 600 MW sites in Texas, Aurora finds that front-of-meter netting, which formally links a data center to co-located but separately connected resources, lets a four-hour battery cut forced curtailment hours by 83% on average, against 53% for the same battery without the link. Arushi is cited in the report.
Key points
- 01PCLR trades faster interconnection for curtailment when the local grid is constrained.
- 02Without mitigation, the modeled sites faced 50 to 241 hours of forced curtailment in a typical weather year.
- 03With front-of-meter netting, a four-hour battery cut forced curtailment hours by 83% on average, versus 53% without it.
